“Reality continues to ruin my life.”
“She understood now why her friend Elizabeth, with her near-genius, analytical mind gave wide berth to murder mysteries, psychological thrillers, and horror stories, and read only romance novels. Because, by God, when a woman picked up one of those steamy books, she had a firm guarantee that there would be a Happily-Ever-After. That though the world outside those covers could bring such sorrow and disappointment and loneliness, between those covers, the world was a splendid place to be.”
What I love about quotes, is that moment of connection you feel upon reading them. When I read, I am drawn to the passages I relate to the most at that time. Sometimes these quotes reflect my current feelings of happiness, loneliness, sadness, etc. Some reflect my feelings about people in my life such as my friends and family. Other quotes my reflect my memories, places I remember, things I have seen or done. And others, I feel reflect me for who I am.
This quote the minute I read it I felt connected, and not JUST because my name is in it or the near-genius part 😉 I really do not read murder mysterious (unless you count the Stephanie Plum novels), psychologucal thrillers or horrors stories. Not to say I won’t read them and haven’t found ones I enjoy, I just generally don’t seek these genres out. I also don’t read strictly romance stories, in fact other than a few authors (my favorite being Susan Elizabeth Phillips) I do not read to many ‘steamy romance books’. BUT I do like to read books where there is romance in it, even if it’s just a subplot and I want my book to end happy, even if the characters go through hell to get there. Books like Hunger Games are some of my favorites, where the main plot is a great adventure about survival, but the underlying plot is how far people go to save those they love, and regardless of all the heartbreak and horror the characters go through, there is a happy ending.
The way I see it, reality is messy, heartbreaking and many parts of it sucks! Sure, there are a lot of amazing parts of life that I wouldn’t give up for anything, but if I am reading to escape reality, I want to escape to a world I want to be a part of, if only for a small time. In these escapes, I can become part of a world where there is a happy ending.
